Os números ordinais indicam ordem ou classificação: 1º(primeiro), 2º(segundo), 3º(terceiro) e etc...

O artigo definido the, normalmente é usado antes de um número ordinal. Exemplo: e.g. "Queen Elizabeth the second."

Para a maioria dos números ordinais, é usado o sufixo th, com "uma ou duas" exceções. Veremos mais sobre isso no decorrer do artigo.

Spelling of Ordinal Numbers

Como vimos no início do artigo, basta adicionar o sufixo th, com algumas exceções:

• four - fourth
• eleven - eleventh

Exceções:

• one - first
• two - second
• three - third

Em números ordinais compostos, apenas o último valor é escrito como um número ordinal:

• 421st = four hundred and twenty-first
• 5,111th = five thousand, one hundred and eleventh

Assim, números como 21st, 33rd e etc... são formados pela combinação de uma dezena cardinal com uma unidade ordinal.

E temos mais um detalhe com relação ao "y" de "twenty", "thirty", "forty" e etc... que é substituído por "ieth", nos números ordinais.

Na abreviação do número ordinal, as duas últimas letras da palavra escrita são adicionadas ao mesmo:

• first = 1st
• second = 2nd
• third = 3rd
• fourth = 4th
• twenty-sixth = 26th
• hundred and first = 101st

Titles

Em nomes de reis e rainhas, os números ordinais são escritos em algarismos romanos. E como vimos no início do artigo, o artigo the é usado antes do número ordinal:

• Charles II - Charles the Second
• Edward VI - Edward the Sixth
• Henry VIII - Henry the Eighth
